Waste Management Receives Outstanding Corporate Leader Award from MADD San Diego County This Week

SAN DIEGO, March 13, 2007 - Waste Management’s operations in San Diego County, based in Carlsbad, Oceanside and El Cajon, this week will receive an outstanding corporate leader award from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) San Diego County at its annual recognition luncheon on Thursday, March 15.

The organization honors outstanding law enforcement, corporate, media and community leaders and volunteers each year for their commitment to furthering MADD’s mission in San Diego County.

“We’re very excited that we have been selected for this award and also to be a multi-year supporter of MADD,” said Jason Rose, Market Area General Manager for Waste Management. “Waste Management’s commitment to a drug- and alcohol-free workplace – ensured by new-hire pre-screenings, as well as counselors and programs that are available to current employees – complements the mission of MADD, since we are also making efforts to help keep our workplace and roadways safe.”

All employees considered for employment at Waste Management must submit to a background check and drug test. Potential employees must pass both, as well as interviews with local management staff, in order to be hired.

Once hired, all employees also are eligible for random, unannounced drug testing that takes place quarterly and focuses primarily on those employees in safety-sensitive positions, such as drivers, equipment operators, mechanics or local management. The company also offers a confidential Employee Assistance Program that provides counselors for employees or their family members who are coping with stress, drug and alcohol abuse, grief, legal problems, financial hardships or other issues that may require assistance. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, at no charge to eligible employees and their benefits-eligible dependents.

“Drunk drivers pose a danger to all motorists and pedestrians on the road, including Waste Management’s professional drivers and collectors, and we are proud to support MADD and all local law enforcement in their efforts to prevent or apprehend people driving under the influence (DUI),” said Rose.

The award will be presented on Thursday, March 15, at 11:30 a.m., at the Del Mar Hilton located at 15575 Jimmy Durante Blvd.
